I’ve been a co-op member since we moved here five years ago (17212).
I would like to suggest that you sell gift certificates that restrict the use of alcohol.
As someone who worked directly with the homeless in Arcata for two years, I am well aware that there are some community members that would like to help someone who is
hungry, but do not want to give them money that they fear would be used for alcohol or other drugs.
I think this could be easily accomplished by the Co-op. If you were to post a sign that said “no alcohol gift certificates available in any denominations” and someone asked for one, you could write NO ALCOHOL in red marker at the top of your already existing gift certificates. Therefore, it would be a minimal cost to the Co-op, and I for one would purchase gift certificates and hand them out.
Thank you for your consideration of my suggestion.

Susan – thanks for the suggestion. we are currently going through some changes with a new front end (cash register) system being installed at the end of the month. I know one change is that we’ll be going to gift cards, but we’ll see what the new system allows us to do.
